Project Snapshot: WinC – Older Women in Cohousing

Project Snapshot: WinC – Older Women in Cohousing

Stage – The group is well underway after 18 months of planning. They are getting ready to purchase land and are now doing the participatory design stage, working with an architect and Women’s Property Initiatives to create the designs for the site, Commonhouse and homes.

Size – 25 homes (studio, 1&2 bdrm), Commonhouse and permacultured garden areas

Description – A community for older women, 50+, most are lesbian, all are excited to create a women’s cohousing community to age well together. We wanted rural Victoria and chose Daylesford as a diversity friendly, small town. Homes will be owned as strata title. We’re an incorporated association, with membership open to older women. The land we’re planning to buy soon is located in walking distance to the centre of Daylesford and near the lake. Great opportunity to help design and build the community. Commonhouse to have guest rooms as well as kitchen, dining, spaces for music, woodworking, exercise, etc. Men and children welcome as guests of residents. We will also have 4 homes for women on low income who will be tenants of Women’s Property Initiatives, a social house provider for women. Homes and Commonhouse will be built using ambitious sustainability and universal accessibility principles.

Availability & How to Join – They are looking for more collaborative women to join, including a few as tenants. The joining process is to meet one of their coordinators (contacts below), then come to two meetings or events and see if it’s a good fit. If so, become a member. Some women are buying now and planning to rent out to other women until the owner retires or is ready to move there. It’s an exciting time, a great little town and a great community. Get in touch if you’d like to learn more.
